The festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 14th January, 2017 and on this day the planet Sun will be entering into the zodiac sign Capricorn. In south India, tamilians celebrate this day as the starting of their New Year and refer this day as the Thai Pongal. The sindhi people celebrate this day as Trimauri. In Gujrat people celebrate this day as Uttarayan and in North India people celebrate this day Sankranti.
According, to Hindu mythology it is believed that on this day Lord Shiva had showered his blessings on his devotee’s especially on sages and therefore they have the good knowledge about the powers. It is also believed that the Lord Shiva has imparted his knowledge to the Lord Vishnu. From this day the counting of days of deities has begun and therefore, when Sun is in Dakshinayan, the period is referred to as night and the next six months of Uttarayan is referred to as day. The one day and one night of deities are equal to six months of human beings. Some of the people also believed that on this day the planet Sun visited to his son planet Saturn and also in the Mahabharata, the BishmaPitamahachoosed this day to get rid of his body.
The Makar Sankranti is the day from when the weather starts changing and the duration of night becomes small while the duration of day becomes long. The season of summer starts from this day because the planet Sun moves towards the northern hemisphere. The planet Sun increases its heat power from this day.
On the day of Makar Sankranti the Til has the special significance in the food items or in the other things. People use this ingredient in many of their recipes on high
scale. You can feel the aroma of the Til everywhere because it has been used at many places in the food items and everyone will be busy in making the food items made up of Til. The donation of Til is also considered to be very auspicious. People put the Til in their bathing water so that they can get pure, put it in the drinking water so that they speak only the good things and eat the food made up of Til so that all sins are being reduced from their life. Devotes on this day prepare the sweets made up of Til and offer it to Lord Shiva so that he can shower his blessings on them and they can achieve the prosperity and happiness in their life. The Pooja offered to the Sun also removes the Dosha of the planet Rahu and Ketufrom the individual’s horoscope.
The Til is considered to be the karak product of the planet Saturn and the jaggery is considered to be the karak product Sun and the donation of these products is considered to be highly auspicious. Donation of these products removes all types of Doshas from the life of an individual so that they can live rest of their life in peace and no evil energies will affect their life at all. People also exchange the home prepared food items with each other because this increases the love between the people.
